The article deals with the functioning of national languages in independent states and RF republics that formerly were part of the Soviet Union. National languages under investigation are sometimes referred to as «title languages», or «the languages of title nations» (to single out the fact that their speakers belong to the ethnic group, that gave the name to the state / republic). These languages, being official, are supported by law and state institutions as instruments of ethnic and cultural identity, and they are supposed to be applied in all spheres of social life. Along with this, Russian–national language bilingualism, that was formed in different regions of the «post-Soviet» space historically, now brings about specific features to languages functioning and languages teaching, as well as to the interrelation of ethnic and cultural groups.
