The article discusses today’s major sociolinguistic theories that have emerged due to the English language globalization, as well as language and culture contacts. New conceptions have been analyzed in the following aspects: metalinguistic (difference of World Englishes, English as a Lingua Franca, English as an International Language, International English), evolutionary (Schneider’s theory of dynamic development of Englishes; norm variability; predictions of the future of English), commercial (simplification of English), and ideological (linguistic imperialism and natural differentiation of the pluricentric language).
