Abstract

The paper discusses the multimodal behavior (source text modifications, gesture use) of conference interpreters during remote simultaneous interpretation. It investigates the effect of working memory capacity and the stimulus delivery quality on interpreters’ multimodal behavior. An experiment followed by annotation of interpreters’ speech and gestures is conducted. Following the analysis of interpreter source text modifications (as a way of overcoming difficulties), the results show that stimulus delivery quality influences the number of difficulties encountered, modifications made, as well as the number of gestures performed.
