The paper provides a theoretical justification for the introduction of the term “translation design” in response to the vague concepts of “specificity” and “features” often used in research on translation. The author considers translation design, firstly, as a collective cognitive and communicative activity for planning and implementing a translation project. As a result of team interactions, a holistic view of the translation product is developed. It affects the adoption of a particular translation decision. Secondly, by means of a categorical-symbolic methodology, the author presents the translation design as a research method using the example of the design concept model of an audiovisual work localization. The model includes categories responsible for the quality of translation (relevance, adaptability, attractiveness) at the linguistic, pragmatic and technological levels. Categories come into conflict under given conditions and are balanced by updating relevant components. Thirdly, the proposed model has practical significance as a didactic practice for developing the skill of planning a translation project.
