Abstract

The article contains the author's memories of his single meeting with Sergei Averintsev and the experience of comprehending Averintsev's methodological attitude to the life-creating task of philology in the wake of this meeting. The author emphasizes that the romantic tradition of German hermeneutics was perceived by Averintsev through the mythopoetic concepts that inherited this tradition, namely: the “symbolology” by Vyacheslav Ivanov and the depth psychology by Carl Gustav Jung, who studied symbols as manifestations of prehistoric primary elements of the human psyche. The parallel between Vyacheslav Ivanov and Carl Jung, introduced into scientific use by Sergei Averintsev, finds confirmation in their common desire to ontologize the image, in their correlative interpretations of the concept of “living symbol”. How deep is the trace of the mythopoetic tradition in the scientific works of Averintsev, in his reflections on the structure of the symbolic image, philological science, world literature? And what was the significance of his thought for readers and authors who learned from him? The main task of this article is to raise these questions.
