Abstract

The article considers the issue that has not received a satisfactory explanation in literature so far. Karl Marx, developing the theoretical foundations of the formation approach and analyzing the most important aspects of the emergence of class society, the development of slavery and trade relations in the ancient Mediterranean, ignored the works of his contemporary Franz Karl Movers, which were a major event in the study of Phoenicia and generated a lively response in the scientific community of Europe. The situation under consideration suggests that the dialectically minded atheist Marx, actively denying the views of Movers as a religious thinker, was obliged to take advantage of rich factography, systematically updated in his works and positioning the history of the ancient Mediterranean with the use of new knowledge about Phoenician antiquities more fully, deeply and comprehensively. However, in the literary legacy of Marx, factography and specific historical provisions from the works of Movers are not reflected in any way, and such a silence seems very strange, given that Karl Marx was diligently interested in the latest achievements in science, and estimated the historical role of commercial Phoenician civilization in the formation of the ancient slave society highly enough. Marx’s peculiar attitude to achievements in the study of Phoenician antiquity qualitatively predetermined the development of relevant knowledge in Russia, since for most of the 20th century, domestic philosophers, historians and teachers, one way or another, correlated the direction of their creative efforts with the provisions enshrined in the texts of the classics of Marxism.
