The author defines psychologically relevant content of the notion «politeness» based on the data received via free association experiment in a group of Russian students aged 17-25 with different majors (total of 1984 respondents). The importance of the research is conditioned by the fact that, firstly, interlocutors’ relationships influence both the character of information processing and the pragmatic result of communication in social contact; secondly, the research contributes to the creation of a factual database for studying problems of intercultural communication, nationally specific content of basic values, universal moral and ethical categories and other cultural concepts. The content of respondents’ associative fields in the group under study shows a decrease in the relevance of polite behavior strategies.
