This paper presents a comparative study of the interethnic tension level in European countries. The aim of the study was to build the interethnic tensions index (IIT-index) based on European Social Survey data (ESS), as well as to identify factors that affect it regarding the countries with the greatest and lowest level of interethnic tensions. The indicators of ethnic tensions were assumed as follows: the attitude towards the resettlement of immigrants in the respondent’s country; the assessment of changes that immigrants bring. The highest level of the inter-ethnic tension index was found in Hungary, the smallest in Sweden. With the help of regression analysis, the factors influencing IIT-index in Hungary and Sweden were identified.
