The article considers the concept of space in the American literature of the 20 th and 21 st centuries. The author analyzes the new notions of space and time and the way writers interpret reality on the basis of novels by Siri Hustvedt, Don Delillo, Paul Auster, and Sol Bellow. These writers present their characters as social outcasts and explore the theme of loneliness of the individual in the society.
