After the October revolution and the Civil war, a large number of Russians emigrated to Shanghai. Although they had a rough life in Shanghai, many of them were engaged in literature, especially poetry. Their works mainly concern their longing for homeland Russia, their lives and their thoughts and feelings in Shanghai. The present paper analyzes the image of Shanghai in their poems. On the basis of this analysis we can conclude that Shanghai is a diversified city which reconciles opposite features, such as modernity and traditionalism, poverty and wealth, glory and ugliness, light and darkness. Our research adds a new dimension to our understanding of the image of the revolutionary Shanghai in the first half of the 20th century and enables us to look at Shanghai from a different angle.
