Abstract

The paper reflects research into the multilingual identical texts of the Lordʼs Prayer within the anthropocentric approach. The source of the prayer text is the Gospel according to St. Matthew. The prayer texts in Old Greek, Latin, Russian, Gothic, German and English are investigated. When necessary, the authors turn to the Old High German, Middle High German, Old English, and Middle English versions of this text. The paper looks into the morphological, syntactical, lexical, compositional, stylistic and semantic features of the Lordʼs Prayer imbedded in the specific cultural and historical context. The authors argue that the Lordʼs Prayer text possesses all the features inherent in a sacral text, structure- and sense-wise. As a special kind of sacral text, the prayer is characterized by the traditional scheme of representation, use of stereotypical cohesion means, inclusion of specific religious vocabulary into the text pattern, reiteration and reproducibility of the syntactic structures. By revealing the above mentioned features, we can determine the position and the role of the Lord’s Prayer in the public liturgy.
