In this article the act of a public apology as a part of cancel culture is analyzed from the standpoint of J. Austin’s speech act theory. The relevance of the research is supported by the interest shown to the phenomena in the context of linguapragmat-ics and real consequences “cancelling” results in. Through content analysis of vari-ous “cancelling” cases in Russian and English-speaking media, a connection is es-tablished between the expression of remorse in the text of the apology and mitiga-tion of the “cancelling” consequences for an individual or a company. The expected perlocutionary effect is observed in cases where the object of the cancelling accepts sole responsibility for their actions, expresses unconditional remorse about them and publicly commits to mitigate their repercussions.
