The article considers one of the attempts to define the genre of fabliau based on the ancient concept of fabula and the transformations it underwent in medieval French literature. The new poetic norms, elements of which can be traced within the framework of short verse narratives, partly anticipate the ideas formulated in the poetic treatises of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. However, the genre definition itself, based on this criterion, needs clarifying parameters.
Middle Ages; France; short narrative; fabliau; fable; fiction; plausibility
