The article is devoted to the study of the works of N.K. Roerich, which reflected the art of the ancient peoples of Central Asia, presented in petroglyphic complexes. It is shown that this topic, although not the main one in the artist’s art, is very extensive and is the result of his serious and long-term scientific research of petroglyphic complexes in Russia, Mongolia, the Himalayas and Tibet. Based on art history and cultural-philosophical analysis of the works of N.K. Roerich his unique creative method which is a fusion of scientific and artistic comprehension of the world, is revealed. This method allows him to deeply penetrate into the essence of ancient cultures; to identify their deeply hidden intersections and to interpret their symbolism in an original way. It is shown that these works by N.K. Roerich are not only highly artistic paintings, but also carry significant aesthetic and spiritual ideals, demonstrating the artist’s deeply humanistic attitude towards man, towards all past forms of his creativity and attempts at a harmonious world order.
