The article considers the journalists’ linguistic and praxeological strategies of one of the most prominent English newspapers The Guardian. It analyzes the newspaper column “Books” connected to the acute culturological issues. The paper aims at studying The Guardian column mentioned, revealing the specific features of the texts style and their aesthetic advantages and disadvantages. It analyzes the materials of this newspaper column in the critical discourse of mass media to reveal the linguistic specificity of journalistic creative work and to give the ecological linguistic commentary on the results of the analysis. The praxeological analysis of the mentioned articles by The Guardian shows that different communicative goals and different genre characteristics of these articles (a book review, an author’s column, a problem issue), together with a multi-modal basis of publications, contribute to a new look at the classical speech production cycle. The effectiveness of statements is determined by the choice of speech strategies (invention): persuasion, discrediting, analytics. The rhetorical design of the articles leads the reader to the conclusions the authors need (disposition): the reader himself is responsible for choosing the book; literature and the author’s gender are incompatible; cultural heritage saving concerns everybody. Finally, the effectiveness of the issues can be explained by the recipient falling into the zone of speech risks (eloquence). The authors intentionally use such linguistic means that provoke the audience to respond: politically incorrect vocabulary, sarcasm, rhetorical indignation, well-expressed mood of necessity.
