The article explores specific features of understanding of love in two historical subperiods: in pre-Norman (VIII – XI c.) and post-Norman (XIII – XV c.) medieval Britain. Lexicographic analysis illustrates an expansion of the semantic facets of the concept in the late medieval period; the same tendency is proved by a conceptual and stylistic analysis of literary works. It results from the development of genre repertoire of the medieval literature, setting in the chivalric values, conceptual synthesis.
