The paper focuses on semantics in the architectural décor of South Spain during the Renaissance. On the basis of monuments of civil construction in Sevilla and Granada the paper considers allegorical devices and artistic methods of their application which transformed into the specificity of the national variant of the style of Spanish Renaissance known as plateresco. The theoretical foundations of the most stable style categories and methods of practical application in decorative art are revealed in the works by Juan de Arfe.
