Finno-Ugric theory of the ancient Russian state origins: On the issue of Varangians, Slovenes, Russ and Rurikids (OPEN ACCESS)

Abstract

The article focuses on the deconstruction of some stereotypes from so called Norseman and Slavic theories on the Russian state origins as a polyethnocultural formation. It briefly describes the elements of the new approach which should be considered a third theory. The paper offers new solutions to the issue of the origins of the terms “Varangians”, “Russ”, “Slovenes” and names of the first Russian princes Rurik, Sineus and Truvor.
