Abstract

As part of the semiosphere described by Yu.M. Lotman, the city is a heterogeneous formation. Not only is it heterotopic, but it is heterochronic as well. Semiotization of various sections of the urban environment according to the norms of different spatial codes over time is replaced by their re-semiotization – rethinking within the framework of the same or some other semiotic systems – and is often accompanied by reconstruction of these sections as spatial texts. The history of St. Petersburg gives many examples of such re-semiotization.
